The 5th 'Bonus' disc
|
The ALIEN Legacy : The making of ALIEN specifications:
This disc by DVD is availible when you buy the box set only. On VHS, it is included within the box-set.
In the DVD box-set you get a postcard, which you mail in with $1.75 (US) if you live in the U.S. and
$4.75 (CDN) if you live in Canada. The offer was good from June 1 to September 1, 1999 or "while
supplies last." It sold out, and was available on ebay for very large prices.
Just take a link over to Sharpline Arts for lots more info on the LEGACY disc. (They helped make it!) They have also provided a 'cover' for
the DVD. Instead of the slipcase it came in, you can print out a .pdf file at their site and
stick that onto a proper DVD case.
To get the Cover, Click Here (1.44 megs, zipped).
To get the Insert, Click Here (1.65 megs, zipped).
Here are Paul's comments on the disc:
I thought that you might want to post some info on it, because it is a very good extra. The
documentary runs a little over an hour long, and basically is one big start-to-finish overview of
how the first movie came to be. Interviews are conducted with the major crew members (no cast),
notably Dan O'Bannon, Ridley Scott, and H.R. Giger. There are scenes of the Giger Museum in
Switzerland showcasing all of his art, which is disturbing and beautiful. One of the best moments in
the documentary is when Ridley Scott describes how he fell over upon recognizing the sketch Giger
had done that he best thought was the right one for the Alien. They talk in detail about the
Chestburster scene, and how watching it induced vomiting and discuss how the cast knew very little
about what was really going to happen in the scene, and how the scream Veronica Cartwright let out
was genuine. The documentary includes many alternate shots, unused cuts, and deleted scenes. They
discuss the props and how all of them were actually functional. They discuss the design of the
Nostromo, and how they wanted the room where Dallas/Ash/Ripley communicated with Mother to look
like a cathedral with all of its blinking lights. Scott and Giger go into detail about how the Alien
made everyone freak out, and how Sigourney Weaver immediately had to have a good stiff cognac upon
seeing it for the first time. To make a long story short: it is worth sending off for. A nice
retrospective.

Errors and Misprints
|
These are mistakes that are either on the DVD packaging, inclusions, inlays or disc malfunctions.
* (Aliens - disc) The actual "Aliens
Special Edition" disc has a printed 138 minute running
time, where in the DVD package lists 154 minutes. A big mistake that can confuse anyone, but not
to fear, it is indeed the longer Special Edition version.
* (Alien 3 - booklet) The ALIEN 3 inlay booklet they have no
picture for Paul McGann (Golic), although his writeup is there. He is the only character not to have
a picture in all the LEGACY booklets.
* (Alien 3 - booklet) The ALIEN 3 inlay card bio for David Fincher contains an error, that any quick fact-checking could have found; it gives his upcoming movie credit to "Rendezvous with Rama", with a release year of 1999. This movie at the time had not even begun filming, although Fincher was attached to direct the film for a time, with Morgan Freeman in the lead.
In any case, his actual upcoming film at the time was 1999's "Fight Club" starring Brad Pitt,
Edward Norton, and Helena Bonham Carter.
* (Alien 3 - dvd case) On the back of the ALIEN 3 DVD (and the
VHS 1998 release) it mentions that All the people on Fironia 161 are ex-cons. This is untrue, as
Superintendent Andrews and Warden Aaron (85) are not ex-convicts.
* (Alien Resurrection - booklet) Inside the "ALIEN Resurrection" booklet, they have a small bios of every character. The information for Dominque
Pinon (Vriess) and J.E. Freeman are mixed up.
* (Alien Resurrection - booklet) Also with the prior listed mistake, the picture given for J.E. Freeman is that of Purvis (Played by Leland Orser), not Freeman's character, Dr. Wren!
* (Alien Resurrection - booklet)
The information in the Alien Resurrection booklet contains another error. The info given for
Jean-Pierre Jeunet is correct, but the picture credited as him is actually that
of cinematographer Darius Khondji. It might be Jean-Pierre Jeunet in the background. A bit of
a silly mistake.
* (Alien Resurrection - dvd case) On the BACK of the ALIEN 4 Dvd case, it lists "co-starring...J.E. Greeman..." Now, unless actor J.E. FREEMAN changed his last name,
the spellchecker might want to be a bit more diligent! :-)
* (card) The box-set includes 9 collector cards.
One card mentions that the Nostromo set down on LV-426 because of an SOS. I thought it was
a distress / warning. [Scott clarifies: "An SOS and a distress signal are the same thing,
and that is essentially why the Nostromo set down on LV-426. If we want to be picky, the
REAL reason they set down was to investigate 'an acoustical beacon that repeats at intervals
of 12 seconds'. Kane asked if it was an SOS, and Dallas said 'unknown'. Ripley didn't start
to find out it was a warning until she ran it through ECIU once Dallas, Lambert and Kane had
already left to investigate the derelict."
* (card) A promo card (as above) also states that
everyone had to shave their heads in ALIEN 3 due to a lice infection. This is an error, as it
was a lice infestation.
